From the Instructor, Debi Cale:
I believe God made me a teacher. It's what I do best. Since 1984 at different times I have taught high school English and speech, college writing, and English as a Second Language (ESL). Teaching ESL is my favorite because of the students. I love to learn about other cultures, the food, the traditions, the languages, the land, the customs, everything. It is always a pleasure to become acquainted with students from all over the world.
I have found that students are most interested in learning to speak English clearly, to be understood by people in this country. In class we will spend time on all four parts of communication: reading, writing, speaking, and listening, but the emphasis will be on conversation. My classes are practical. You will likely use what you learn in class that same day.
In my experience as a student I have found that the best classes, the ones where I learned the most, were classes where I was actively involved. In my classes you will use all of your five senses. You will work with partners and in groups on conversations, you will write and perform role-plays, you will play games, you will use your body. In the fall we sample different types of Michigan apples and use English to describe the taste, texture, size and color of each. In November we talk about Thanksgiving and make pumpkin pies. At Christmas time we listen to songs about Christmas and talk about their meaning. I hope you will teach me about holidays in your home country as well.
As a teacher, I am always listening to my students. I want you to be as comfortable in my classroom as you can. I want to meet your specific needs as a student. I am always available to meet with a student before or after class, to talk on the phone, or to exchange emails.
~ Debi Cale.
