“Believing in Every Person” (Luke 13:10-17)

When Jesus says that those who enter will come from every direction of the compass (13:29), we are impressed with the inclusiveness of the gospel - it is for everyone. This has been Luke's theme from the beginning. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him (John 3:17). Every kind of need and pain was touched by the mercy and love of Jesus during his few years on earth. When a bent over, crippled woman came to worship, Jesus saw her; he had compassion; he touched her; he healed her. Over and over in Scripture, Jesus showed compassion for people. He did not look on people with contempt or with indifference. One of the most sweeping statements about God's mercy that Jesus ever made came from Hosea 6:6. "Go and learn what this means, 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice'. For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners" (Matthew 9:13). And "If you had known what this means, 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless" (Matthew 12:7). It was Jesus' way of putting the whole Old Testament law under the banner of mercy and love. God beckons all people to come boldly to His throne through Jesus Christ who can "sympathize with our weaknesses" (Hebrews 4:15).
