Grand Openings: Opening Eyes

"Believing in a Life of Service" (Luke 22:24-27)

While they were sitting around the Passover table, the disciples somehow got embroiled in a discussion as to which one of them would be the greatest. This highlights the fact that they had missed the whole point of what was happening. Undoubtedly each one presented arguments as to why he should be the greatest within their group. Jesus' response sets entirely different standards for greatness. How is one great? By being a servant. In bearing the cross of humility and service, we gain a new perspective - a new way of living - that is free from the struggle of status and self-worth. It is faithfulness and not position that is important to God. The temptation to press for recognition is strong, to see our name in print or lights, to be seated at the head table. But Jesus reminds us, "He that is least among you all - he is the greatest."
